We are in new territory regarding the Covid 19 pandemic. What is clear is that it is with us for the foreseeable future, and that slowing it down will buy time for the medical services to cope, and to find ways of limiting the worst symptoms and maybe ultimately finding a vaccine to prevent it.

If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold.

Coronavirus pneumonia starts typically with a dry cough and no runny nose. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat typically lasting 3/4 days.

This can last up to a week and may then disappear completely. However, the virus may blend into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This may last for a further 5/6 days. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing. It's then imperative to seek immediate medical attention.

How the Virus Spreads and Sensible Measures to Limit the Spread

If someone sneezes with the virus, it may travel 10 feet or more before it is no longer airborne.

If it drops on a metal or other hard surface, it can live for 12 hours or more. So, if you come into contact with any shared hard surface, wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap. On fabric, it can survive for 6-12 hours. Normal laundry detergent will kill it.

Wash your hands frequently. Although the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, your hands can easily make contact with your eyes, nose or mouth in that time.

Gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.

Drink plenty of water! Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Drinking liquids with ice will not work. Everyone should ensure that their mouth and throat remain moist. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Because even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash it down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill the virus. If you don't drink enough water regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs. That's when it becomes very dangerous.

Every effort must be made to prevent the disease from spreading, and to lessen the chances of transmission.  Please observe the following steps, both in your own interest and in the interests of your colleagues and their families.

·        If anybody with whom you have had contact in the last two weeks has been diagnosed with Coronavirus, or is showing any symptoms of Coronavirus, then please self-isolate for a minimum of two weeks and do not come to work.

·         If you have travelled abroad within the last two weeks, please self-isolate for two weeks before returning to work.

·        On arrival at work, going shopping , the doctors - or anywhere where people are gathered together - please use hand sanitiser or wash thoroughly for a minimum of twenty seconds before doing what you went for…… and do the same when you leave, then again when you arrive home.

Note that this advice may change at any time and updates will be published and posted accordingly.
